What Archaeological Evidence Reveals About Early Celts

The material traces left by the early Celts — burials, hill forts, metalwork, and settlements — and what modern scholars have been able to reconstruct from them about the emergence of Celtic civilization.

The Celts left no written records of their own emergence, and the Greek and Roman sources that first mention them were written centuries after the events they describe. The deepest knowledge of the early Celts therefore comes not from texts but from things: the pots, swords, brooches, salt mines, hill forts, and burials that archaeologists have painstakingly recovered across Europe over the past two centuries. To examine the origins and emergence of the Celts through the archaeological evidence is to follow a chain of inference, from the way a bronze sword was cast to the way a chief organized the labor of a salt-mining community. Taken together, those material traces constitute the most reliable evidence for the rise of the Celtic world, and they form the foundation on which the broader history of the Celtic civilization is built.

The Material Culture Approach

Modern archaeology of the early Celts is grounded in a simple principle: people who share a language, a religion, a way of life, and a set of economic relationships tend to produce material objects that look alike, and changes in those objects can be read as evidence of changes in the people who made them. The two cultural horizons that archaeologists use to identify the early Celtic world are the Hallstatt culture, dating from roughly 800 to 450 BCE, and the La Tène culture, dating from roughly 450 BCE to the Roman conquest. The transition between the two is one of the most studied problems in European archaeology, and it is examined in detail in the La Tène and Hallstatt art styles.

The Hallstatt Cemeteries

The richest source of evidence for the earliest phase of the Celtic world is the cemetery. The Hallstatt region, in the Salzkammergut of modern Austria, contains thousands of burials from the eighth to the fifth centuries BCE, many of them remarkably well preserved in the dry conditions of the salt-mining area. The earliest systematic excavations were carried out in the mid-nineteenth century by geologists drawn to the area by the salt deposits, and they were soon followed by the great Austrian prehistorian Matthäus Much, whose work laid the basis for the modern understanding of Hallstatt society.

The Hallstatt cemeteries reveal a society of considerable wealth and social complexity. The richest burials, such as the one at Hallstatt itself containing a man buried with a long iron sword, a bronze helmet, decorated belt plates, and a set of bronze vessels for feasting, show that an aristocratic warrior class controlled access to the salt trade and to the imported luxuries of the Mediterranean world. The presence in the same cemetery of far more modest graves, with little or no grave goods, suggests a sharply stratified society in which wealth and status were passed from generation to generation within a small ruling elite.

The Princely Burials

The most spectacular Hallstatt burials are the so-called “princely” graves of the late Hallstatt period, dating from roughly 600 to 500 BCE. These enormous burial mounds, found across central Europe from Burgundy to the Hungarian plain, contained the bodies of individuals buried with an astonishing display of wealth: gold jewelry, imported Greek and Etruscan bronze vessels, war chariots, and elaborate feasting equipment. The Hochdorf princely grave in southwestern Germany, excavated in 1978-1979, contained a single male burial lying on a bronze couch decorated with scenes of warriors and chariots, surrounded by nine finely decorated bronze drinking horns, a large cauldron, a set of gold fittings, and a wagon with four wheels, all covered by a great mound of stones some 60 meters in diameter.

The Vix burial in Burgundy, excavated in 1953, contained a similar display of wealth, including the famous Vix krater, a massive Greek bronze mixing vessel standing 1.64 meters tall and weighing 208 kilograms. The krater was manufactured somewhere in the western Greek colonies, and it was almost certainly too large to be used as a practical drinking vessel. It must have served a ceremonial function, perhaps in a funerary ritual, and its presence in a Burgundian burial demonstrates the extent to which Hallstatt elites were integrated into the Mediterranean trade networks that linked the Celtic world with the Greek and Etruscan cities of the south.

Hill Forts and Defended Sites

The second great body of archaeological evidence for the early Celtic world is the hill fort. Thousands of hill forts have been identified across the Celtic world, ranging from small univallate enclosures of less than a hectare to massive multivallate complexes covering many hectares. In Britain, the great hill forts of the Iron Age, including Maiden Castle in Dorset, Danebury in Hampshire, and Cadbury Castle in Somerset, are among the most impressive monuments of the prehistoric European landscape. On the continent, the Heuneburg on the upper Danube, the Ehrenbürg near Forchheim, and the many fortified sites of the Hunsrück-Eifel culture of western Germany attest to a similar tradition of defended settlement.

The function of these hill forts is debated. The traditional view, that they were primarily defensive structures built in response to the threat of warfare, has been challenged by excavations that show many hill forts were not occupied continuously. The investment in massive earthworks may have been motivated as much by social, political, and religious considerations as by military ones. Recent interpretations emphasize the role of hill forts as centers of trade, craft production, and political administration, and as stages for the public ceremonies that bound Celtic societies together.

The La Tène Lake Site

The site that gave its name to the second great phase of the Celtic archaeological record is La Tène, on the northern shore of Lake Neuchâtel in Switzerland. La Tène is a sanctuary site, a place where large numbers of iron and bronze objects were deposited in the lake, probably as votive offerings, between the fifth century BCE and the first century CE. The objects recovered include swords, spearheads, shields, helmets, brooches, bracelets, tools, and wooden wheels, all preserved in the oxygen-poor sediments of the lake bed.

The La Tène material is the source of the characteristic curvilinear art style of the later Celtic world. The decoration of La Tène objects is dominated by flowing, plant-inspired motifs: curling tendrils, palmettes, abstract masks, and intricate spirals, rendered with a confident plasticity that breaks decisively with the geometric traditions of the earlier Bronze Age styles. The spread of this La Tène style across Europe in the fourth and third centuries BCE is the most reliable evidence for the geographic extent of the Celtic cultural complex at its height.

The Linguistic Evidence

Archaeology provides the material context for the Celtic world, but the language of the Celts is known primarily from inscriptions and place names. Celtic personal names appear in Greek and Latin sources from the fifth century BCE onward, and the Gaulish language is preserved in a corpus of inscriptions from Gaul, northern Italy, and central Anatolia. The continental Celtic languages share a set of distinctive phonological features that mark them as a clearly defined branch of the Indo-European family. The relationship between the continental and the insular Celtic languages is a major topic of Celtic linguistics and the oral tradition.

The combination of linguistic, archaeological, and historical evidence is therefore essential for any balanced view of the early Celtic world. Most archaeologists now accept that the spread of La Tène material culture is a reasonable proxy for the spread of Celtic-speaking populations, although the relationship is not a one-to-one one, and there are well-attested cases in which La Tène material culture was adopted by populations that did not speak Celtic languages.

The Genetic Evidence

In the past two decades, the development of ancient DNA analysis has added a new dimension to the archaeology of the early Celts. Studies of DNA from Hallstatt and La Tène burials in central Europe have shown that the population of the Celtic heartland in the Iron Age was genetically continuous with the local Bronze Age populations of the same region, with no major displacement or replacement detectable. This finding is consistent with the view that the emergence of the Celts was a cultural and linguistic process superimposed on a relatively stable genetic substrate.

The genetic evidence is more complex when it comes to the expansion of Celtic populations into new regions. Studies of DNA from Iron Age burials in Britain, for example, suggest a substantial influx of new population from the continent during the late Bronze Age and early Iron Age, consistent with the traditional view of a Celtic migration into the island. In Iberia, the genetic evidence suggests a more complex picture, with significant local continuity alongside the arrival of new populations. The combination of genetic, archaeological, and linguistic evidence is producing a much more nuanced picture of the early Celtic world than was possible even a generation ago.
